I've lived in Texas since the 1980s. It used to be easy to select a light company. You only had one electricity utility company available per service area.
Then around 2002, our utility commision decided that it is a better idea to have choices. Thank you ERCOT and Texas Pubic Utility Commission. You know, when I had only one provider I wished that I had a choice. No customer really likes for one energy provider to have a monopoly on electricity. So, I was happy with the idea of electricity company deregulation, competition, and choice. The thinking is that electricity rates would be lower. In theory, it should be good for the electric energy consumer.
Now that I have electric provider choices to provide power to my home and business, I have to make a decision. The reality is that what should be easy is not.
Here's what is interesting. You have what are called (REPs) retail electricity providers in Texas. There is no difference in the electricity that they provide. In fact they don't even control the electric pipelines, the grid, nor the infrastructure. The REPs control their electricity rates and customer service.
So, how do you decide which electricity provider should provide service to you in Texas?
Well, I started with their electric rates. You don't wan to stop at just their electricity rates even though that's what comes to mind when you get that electricity bill. You also want to be mindful about customer service. For example, when you receive that bill and you need t o talk with a real person about your high elctricity bill. How long do you have to hold on the phone? How many hoops do they make you jump through to get a resolution?
While I've done the electricity costs and rates research for you (and the electricity rates are always changing) remember that your energy options and electric choice in Texas is not only about price but also service.
